Some updates in our blog

Based on the questions that we have received by e-mail and on the statistics of Google Search keywords, quite many are searching for information on Hallberg-Rassy 29. We are pleased that even during winter time there is interest in our posts.

Thus, we keep updating our blog regularly. The former Boat site/tab on the navigation bar on top of the posts was renamed as Hallberg-Rassy 29 and it contains some new information and photos. This page will also be updated if we write more about the boat, so it always contains all the relevant information. For example, Antti is planning to post about the pros and cons of the keel structure in HR 29.

Another site in the navigation bar that is now updated is Season 2011. There is now a summary of the last season's adventures and additionally some photos.

Antti has also lately been working on a travel story from our trip to Southern Norway for a Finnish boating magazine. More about this later...

Autumn break: Åre in Sweden and a road trip to Norway

This weekend we made an autumn trip to Åre, one of the leading Scandinavian skiing resorts, situated in Jämtland County in Sweden. We were actually on a skiing holiday in Åre last February and liked very much the place and the beautiful hotel we lived in: Copperhill Mountain Lodge. This summer, we were lucky enough to win an online competition and the prize was a three-day stay in the hotel before the winter season start. Thus, we visited Åre again and were happy to come back to this inspiring scenery.

Unfortunately, the autumn has been warm in Sweden as well so there was not yet enough snow for skiing. But Åre is located close to the Norwegian border so on Saturday we drove to Norway to see the the Trondheimsfjord and the Atlantic Ocean. We also went to see a local marina in Stjørdal. It was interesting to discover that many boats were staying in water over the winter. Due to the Gulf Stream, most of the Norwegian coastline remains free of ice during the winter so one does not have to lay up the boat. 

One option that we can keep in mind for future expeditions in Norway, is to leave the boat in Norway for winter and come back next year. Stjørdal Båtforening could be the place for this... Do you have experience of wintering in Norway or recommendations for other harbours?

Winter maintenance and planning some gear updates

A few weeks ago I wrote that we are doing the bottom renovation (new epoxy primer+antifouling) during this winter. Unfortunately, we found out that soda blasting is not allowed in Raisio, where S/Y Dolphin Dance is laid-up for winter. Thus, this job has to be postponed until next autumn. There is no way we would have enough time to scrape the antifouling and the primer layers during this autumn. Nevertheless, the hull should be well dried before adding the new layer of epoxy barrier coat, so the scraping of the bottom cannot be left until spring. Thus, the current plan is to sand blast the underwater hull next autumn, put the boat in a warm hall for the winter and paint new epoxy barrier coat the following spring.

We have had very warm autumn and temperatures are well above zero. However, the boat is now fully prepared for winter. Now that things are getting easier with the boat maintenance, it is good time to plan some gear updates. As mentioned earlier, we need to replace the fridge compressor so we are now comparing different models.

Lately, I have been looking for possibility for installing a bow thruster. HR 29 is quite a heavy boat, and due to the longish keel, steering backwards is not very efficient. A bow thruster would definitely help. Unfortunately, the normal tunnel bow thruster may be difficult to install, because the water and septic tanks in HR 29 are located in the fore peak. The installment might require some modifications on those, so this might be a bigger project. Another thing we would like to have for next season is a bowsprit for gennaker. Until now we have been using the gennaker attached to a pullpit. However, it would be more practical to use roller furling gennaker with a small bowsprit, like this stainless steel tube that is used in new HRs:
